Children's Milestones

My girls are turning 17 months this coming Sunday. Seriously, so crazy to me. Where does the time go? They are constantly changing each week and I feel like they grow inches and gain pounds every week. I am sure it is more likely that it happens monthly, but it feels daily or weekly to me.

I have been a bit worried lately about their development....more specifically their walking. It seems every baby that is around us is walking if they are 10 months and older. Except mine. And it breaks my heart and makes me worry.

Their pediatrician said as long as they are walking by 18 months, we have nothing to worry about. But is that 18 months real age or adjusted age? Because they are almost 17 months real age and 15 1/2 months adjusted age.

Last Friday at my twin mom group lunch, I brought this up to them and they all assured me that my girls are just fine and everyone walks, crawls, sits up and everything else on their own.

We have been practicing walking with them everywhere. We have them walk from the front room to their room, to our room, to the kitchen and everywhere in between. We hold one hand and encourage them to let go, but it hasn't happened yet....

Until yesterday. We went to visit the girls at daycare like we normally do and I was standing Sutton up away from me and helping her walk to me. I let her hands go on one try and she took two steps to me and fell into my arms. So we tried it again and she took another two steps. We tried this a few times and sometimes she would sit right back down, but she was taking steps. Then on our final try I put her way back from me and she took five steps to me, stood there and clapped and sat down. I cried because I was so happy. She finally walked.

And Rory tried with Avery to our surprise who took two steps to her dad and fell into his lap. Then she cried and didn't want to try it anymore. Seriously, I was worrying over nothing. Sure, they may have walked later than other babies, but they did it at their own pace. So let's hope this keeps up.

Now I know to some this isn't exciting for you all, but it is for me and I wanted to document this special day here in my blog...aka my life journal. So thank you all for sharing this with me.

When we got home, we worked on walking more. Sutton is a walking machine. Avery stood on her own for a long time and took three steps on her own. She's ready to start running soon. In no time, I will have two crazy toddlers who I am running after and thinking why did I ever want them to walk, let alone run. Haha.

    1. Thank you. I feel a ton better about this. I hate worrying about those types of things, but I am a mama (as you are) and it is hard to not worry about them :)

  2. Ahh yay!! That's SO exciting! It's so stressful when you feel like every other baby is doing something yours isn't. I feel that way ab sitting unassisted. He's almost there but I've been stressing over it. You better watch out now. Once they start walking it's on! :)

    1. It is hard to not stress about those things. Especially as preemies or NICU babies, but they did it on their own and I am sooo proud. I am worried about them running around now, but it is a welcomed craze.

  5. Take a deep breath mama. I had this same fear too. E will take some steps some days and not others. We have to let our type a personality go with them. They are thriving and gorgeous and will not crawl to kindergarten lol.

    1. Me too. I was worried it would happen and I wouldn't get to live through it.

  7. Worrying is a parents second nature but most of the time our worrying is for nothing. So don't beat yourself up and enjoy the toddling stage.

  8. We all worry about our kids - I think it's just part of being a mom. It's so hard not to compare, especially since there seem to be "standards" out there, but all kids do things at their own pace. You must've been so thrilled when your girls took their first solo steps yesterday. Such a fun and exciting milestone! Enjoy it - and enjoy the workouts you're about to get from chasing them all the time! ;)

    1. Yes they do and I have to remember that, but it is hard at times. The look on their faces was the best. We were hugging, kissing and squeezing them and they were soooo happy. I loved it. Yes we will be chasing them everywhere. Phew.

  9. Yay you have little walkers! I always hear that kids develop different milestones at different times but I totally get that it's worrisome if they are later "than usual"

  10. Danielle, that is so wonderful! That video you posted on Insta the other night was so perfect. I know you're relieved. We had two late walkers as well... Jacob didn't walk until around 15 months and Olivia was close to that as well. I remember being so worried about Jacob since he was the first child, but by the time Olivia came along I wasn't as concerned anymore since we had already been through it with J. It's hard not to compare your kids to other kids, though. I feel like I'm always comparing.

    1. Awe thank you. I loved it and have watched their videos non-stop. I am that mom. Yep. I hate comparing my girls to others, but it's hard not to. Something I have to work on. I didn't know they were later walkers too. So glad my girls weren't the only ones!

  11. I totally think this is exciting! I loved your video on Insta last night! Even without children of my own, I think it's so fun/heartwarming to hear about (and see!) little ones learning to walk!
