Friday's Five

I am so thankful Friday is here. First, it is hard being back at work for a full week after having over a week off. Second, I finally caved and went to the doctor yesterday since I couldn't get my sickness under control and I have a sinus infection. Ugh. That makes three in less than a year. They want to send me to the ENT. But the good news is, I got some antibiotics and I am hoping this kicks its butt and I can finally feel better after being sick for about a month.

In the meantime, let's move onto something more positive....my favorites, finds and happenings.

ONE. I am pretty excited that Prison Break starts on Tuesday. I remember watching the series with my roommates and was pretty sad when it ended. The last season wasn't that great, but the first two were amazing. If they put all their effort into this fifth season and made it as good as the first season, I will be hooked. Will you be watching?

TWO. Do you follow Pearl and Monroe on Instagram? Well she posted the cutest shirts and dresses this week. It took a lot in me not to purchase so many items, but I couldn't pass up this chambray tank she posted. I just hope it fits and looks as cute on me as it did on her in her IG stories.

THREE. Remember those Melissa Bow Sandals I got for my Mexico trip? They were on clearance for $17 or something ridiculous like that. Well they are cute and didn't hurt my feet (I wore them to the pool and around PV), but I am not sure they are an all day sandal. I have been searching for other pairs and I came across these beauties. They are way more than I want to spend, but they are just beautiful and I hope way more practical. But that price tag. Not sure if I can pull the trigger, but I thought I would share them if you are looking for a white/tan cute sandal.

FOUR. A few weeks ago while shopping at Trader Joes before our vacation, I stumbled upon a yummy fruit bar that I brought on the airplane for a healthier snack, ie not the oreo cookies, fritos and cheese crackers I also accepted. Sure they don't have much to them, but they taste good, give you a little boost and are good for you. They have two ingredients...just the fruits in them. And they are toddler approved.

FIVE. I can't believe today is the last day of March. Tomorrow brings April which brings my mom's birthday, Easter and spring skiing conditions. We don't have much plans this weekend. I hope to clean my car, take some photos and post my car online to see if it can bring in any decent offers. I also hope to test drive another car, go shopping at Target by myself (new swimsuit tops) and get my Easter baskets shopped for.

What plans do you have?

Confessions and Thoughts on Thursday

I almost forgot to write a post for today. Almost. Being back in the office this week means that I have had a lot to catch up on and haven't thought about much else when I leave work.

But I am here for some confessions and thoughts on Thursday, so grab the button, write your thoughts or confessions and come back here to link up. And don't worry, I am working on a new button, but I have been busy.

grab button for Sparkles and Lattes
<div class="sparkles-and-lattes-button" style="width: 250px; margin: 0 auto;"> <a href="http://sparklesandlattes.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow"> <img src="http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t472/lmalex13/Confessional%20Thursday.jpg" alt="Sparkles and Lattes" width="250" height="250" /> </a> </div>

I CONFESS...

/ that I feel like I am sooo far behind on work, emails, blog reading and responding to comments. I love vacation, but I get so far behind when I leave. I know, good problems to have!

/ that while talking to co-workers yesterday at a birthday celebration, my husband tells me that I am 34. Nope, sorry buddy, don't age me. I am still 33 for another 4 months. Thank.You.Very.Much.

/ that I really hate this IG follow/un-follow game. I also hate the algorithm for it. Seriously, some of my good friends who I always want to see their feeds are so far down. Ugh. And I have had some big bloggers follow me recently only to un-follow me two days later. Seriously irks me. I don't know why I care so much about how many people follow me, but I do. Ugh.

/ that I want to buy all the Spring things. Dresses with no shoulders, chambray tops, pineapple shorts and new sandals. Give it all to me.

/ that I really want to try BurgaBox after seeing it on other blogs, but the price is just ouch. I know you get all of the toppings and sides, but $67 for a monthly box seems high. I don't even spend that out to dinner on a high end burger place. Has anyone tried it and thought it was TOTALLY worth it?

/ that I am so sick of being sick. I was sick for two and a half weeks with viral bronchitis and got over it in time for Mexico and then I got a sore throat on our last full day in Mexico and it seems to have gotten worse. That means I have been sick for basically a month and it sucks. Ugh. My immune system used to be so awesome. Even after the girls were born, but this last year has kicked my butt. Please let this be the last sickness and have it go away on its own. I don't want anymore antibiotics. Ugh.

THOUGHTS

- I am finally getting my windshield replaced today. It only took a month or two. The main reason I am finally doing it...I want to possibly sell my car and I can't sell it with a cracked windshield. What cars am I looking at? Well that post comes next week.

- I have had my house decorated for Easter since before St. Patrick's Day, but I haven't bought anything for Easter baskets. And I just got notice that I have to get eggs filled with something for the girls' school. Better get there this week, so I am not getting things a few days before like I did for Valentine's Day.

- I really want a new fitness tracking watch. Which ones do you all have? Thoughts on them?

- This is random, but I had to share. I had a co-worker make some popcorn on Tuesday and it burned in the microwave causing lots of smoke and evacuation from the building. This is the second time it has happened in a year. Last time, the person replaced the microwave. So this microwave isn't old. She claims she microwaved it for one minute, but I call foul. Then when people joked about it later, she flew off the handle and was grumpy. No, lady. Everyone else should be grumpy since our clothes smelt like burnt crap and we couldn't breathe in our office for the rest of the day.

Puerto Vallarta Mexico Vacation Days 1 and 2

It's time to recap our family trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The good, bad and ugly. Yes, we experienced it all.

We left on St. Patrick's Day which meant free drinks on Southwest. We didn't partake in one on our flight from Reno to Oakland, but others did. Though we did enjoy drinks on our flight from Oakland to PV. The girls were relatively good on the plane. They love taking off and landing. They also love getting snacks on the plane. We only had a few meltdowns which were quieted down quickly and so many nice passengers next to us that assured us they were great.

Rory sat next to the girls on all flights. I tried to, but Avery just wasn't having it. She only wanted her daddy.

We arrived in PV and headed out to Customs which was a short line since we made it in when no other flights did. We got through that quickly, headed over to grab our bags and then waited in a semi-long line to have your bags checked at random. Good news is we made it through without getting checked. Then we headed outside to the sweltering heat (we were all in pants) to catch a cab.

It was crazy outside. The time we went is when the last sets of Spring Breakers are coming in, so there were a lot of people out there. You have to ask around because the cab companies want to up charge you big time. But we found a good priced cab, packed in and headed to the Zona Romantica where our condo is located.

My in-laws met us upstairs and took the girls inside so we could unpack and get settled in. Our condo is a two bedroom, two bath with a full kitchen. My in-laws are sweet enough to give us the master bedroom and bath so we can accommodate two pack n plays. We got everything set up, changed our clothes and had a beer on the deck to watch the ocean roll in.

We caught up on our day, how the flights went and what we were to have to eat that evening. My in-laws said they would feed the girls and put them to bed if we wanted to head out to dinner since it was our first evening in. We gladly accepted.

We headed off to Jorge's Hideaway Shrimp Shack. You may remember that we went there last year and it was really good. So we went again and it did not disappoint. This time I started off with their salad that had avocado, jicama, grapefruit, nuts, other goodies and a balsamic vinaigrette. I also had a blackberry margarita with real chunks of blackberries in it. Then I had their shrimp diablo in a pineapple. This dish is heaven. It comes with a red rice that compliments the dish perfectly. It is spicy, sweet and has so much flavor to it.

After dinner, we walked around since we were stuffed. But not too stuffed for gelato. We grabbed a scoop each and walked the Melacon (boardwalk) before calling it a night.

Now sleep was an issue for the first few days in Mexico. Avery was still under the weather from her ear infection and was a bit grumpy. She would call out for her daddy often while she slept and it caused us to bring her in our bed more than one night.

Saturday morning we got up bright and early and headed to Coco's Kitchen for their yummy breakfast. I had their Puerto Vallarta omelet which had bacon, onions and avocado with hash browns and fresh fruit. I also had coffee and fresh squeezed oj. The girls had pancakes while everyone else had an assortment of pancakes, omelets and eggs benedict. Plus everyone enjoyed a different fresh squeezed juice.

After breakfast we walked around the farmer's market and bought the girls two dresses and handmade bird coat hooks. We also picked up a few items and then headed back to the condo since it was warming up. We put the girls down for an early nap and I headed out to grab iced coffees for everyone. We used naptime to catch up on social media and read my book.

After naptime, we contemplated what to do while Avery and I took selfies.

Taking a walk won, so we headed out to walk the Melacon with the girls.

After our walk, we got ready to head up to the rooftop pool. Our condo has a salt water pool that is heated and so nice. We brought the girls floaties up, but they didn't care for them the first time.

We swam for about an hour before heading down and getting ready for the evening. We fed the girls some mac n cheese from a local market (this stuff was made daily, heaven and sold out fast). Then we headed out for Pancho's Takos. This is another place we went to last year and it never disappoints. You can get so much food for about $15, including tip. That is what we spent. Rory and I ate there and brought back tacos for my in-laws.

We started off with the guacamole because it is heaven. They serve everything with their three salsa and a mixture of jicama, mango, onions, habanero in a vinegar of some sorts. We would mix it all together on our chips to make some amazing combos.
Pancho's Takos
This is spicy, so we could not read the habanero and just let it flavor everything.
Pancho's Takos salsa
They were all good and different levels of spice, but the bottom left was my favorite.

Then it was time for the main attraction. The al pastor tacos. They make their meat on a spicet and it just cooks while you watch. It is so much fun to watch the guy spin and cut the meat off and make soooo many tacos. They add a little slice of pineapple that sits at top of the spicet. These tacos are heaven and if I could eat 10 of them, I would, but I can't. I had two and a half. Ha.

After dinner, we dropped off the tacos to my in-laws and headed back out to get some drinks at Joe Jack's Fish Shack and watch some of the tournament.

After a couple rounds of drinks, great conversation and some tournament watching, we walked back to the condo to read some and head to bed.

And that ends day 2 of our PV vacation. Stay tuned for more.

Sauteed Brussels Sprouts Recipe

One of my favorite sides is brussels sprouts. Growing up, I would NEVER eat them. I had only tried them steamed which were awful. They were like tiny stinky cabbages. No thank you. My mom loved them, but the rest of my family did not.

Many many years later, I was in NYC for work and I went to dinner with my co-workers at one of Mario Batali's restaurants, Otto Enoteca e Pizzeria. Someone ordered the roasted brussels sprouts and convinced me to try it again and I was hooked.

For a long time, I would only order them out, but then I started buying them and trying new ways of cooking them. I have roasted them and sauteed them many different ways. But one of my favorites is super simple and I always have the ingredients on hand for it.

INGREDIENTS

Brussels Sprouts
A couple cloves of garlic thinly sliced
Salt
Pepper
1 Tbl. Olive Oil
Balsamic Vinegar (a good one. I have a few that I buy locally, but I used Big Horn (local) which you can order online)

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut off the stems of your brussels sprouts. Then chop them in half if they are on the large side. This helps them cook faster.

2. Heat your olive oil at medium heat in a saute pan. I usually just swirl the bottle a couple times in the pan.

3. Add your brussels sprouts. Stir to coat with the oil. Add in salt and pepper to your taste. Turn down your heat if they are cooking quickly. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often.

4. Once the brussels are close to being done, add in your garlic to brown. Do not burn your garlic.

5. Once the brussels are cooked to your liking (browned and semi-soft), turn down the heat to low and add in your balsamic vinegar. Start with a little and add more as you like. I usually let the vinegar cook in for about 2 to 3 minutes.

Weekending

Wow, it feels like I haven't been here in forever, but in reality it has only been just over a week. Last week was fun, crazy, stressful, relaxing and full of food and alcohol. Just the way a vacation should be. Ok, maybe minus the stress and craziness of it. But we still made the best of our time. I hope to recap part of our trip in the next day or two and work from there.

We came back from Mexico on Saturday. We decided to leave Saturday instead of Sunday due to the timing of the flights. Every flight got us in between 8 and 10 pm. That was our main reason for flying home on Saturday. Also, we wanted a day to recover from vacation. You know, to do laundry (we managed 8 loads yesterday), grocery shop, give Walter a bath, settle the girls back into somewhat of a routine again and prep for the week ahead. I am so glad that we did that because it was much needed.

We had a partial day in Puerto Vallarta on Saturday which would have been great if I had not woken up with the worst stomach ache ever. It felt like knives cutting my insides up. Awful. I tried to throw up, nope. I had some alka seltzer and that seemed to help, but only temporarily.

My in-laws went out and grabbed us some breakfast to eat in the condo while we got ready and got everything packed up. We ate breakfast and then hung out until it was time to go. Rory went down to the little market to grab some items for the flight home, but other than that, we just enjoyed the rest of our time that we had left.

We took some photos right before we left to go to the airport. We said our goodbyes and took off to the airport. It took awhile to get through the check-in process plus security, but we made good time and were able to sit for a bit before getting on the plane.
Puerto Vallarta family photo

We decided to put one adult and two children in one row and the other adult across from them. Guess who got to sit next to the girls? Rory. Avery had a big attachment to Rory the entire trip, so she didn't want to sit with me. Other than a few time she just wanted to sit on my lap for a bit. This was better for me as I was feeling awful. I did finish Big Little Lies (finally) and it was really good. I can't wait to watch the tv show now.

I did get sick once on the plane and it made me feel so much better. Thank goodness for barf bags. And making it to the bathroom before I threw up.

We landed in Oakland and had a 4 hour layover, but it was about 3 hours after we got through Customs and security.

We pushed the girls around in their strollers, grabbed some food and sat at an empty gate watching the NCAA tournament. I was finally able to eat something and have it stick.

Our flight into Reno was quick and easy. The girls slept the whole way.

We got home, changed the girls, gave them a quick wipe down and put them to bed. Then we unpacked, showered and watched Modern Family before heading to bed.

Sunday morning we headed to breakfast since we didn't have much in the house. Once we were home, the girls and I did laundry and played while Rory headed out to an appointment. The girls started falling asleep on me at 11:15 so I put them to bed for a nap. While they napped, I caught up on Grey's Anatomy and folded a lot of laundry.

Rory came home with coffee in hand and I enjoyed that while finishing Grey's and then I headed out to the grocery store. Once I was back from the store, we unloaded everything and went on a walk.

After our walk, I had to run back out to the pet store to get Walter more shampoo and some treats. We gave Walter a bath which was much needed. Does anyone else bathe their dogs after they were boarded?

We did more laundry, more cleaning, more playing and then made dinner for the girls. Once they were done and the food was settled, we gave the girls their baths and then I started on dinner for Rory and I. I made stuffed bell pepper which were done right after the girls went down for the night. We spent the rest of the night relaxing, watching The Americans and doing more laundry before calling it a night.

Friday Favorites

I am usually pretty excited about Friday's, but this Friday means that we only have another couple days in Mexico and I am going to be sad to leave. I am looking forward to seeing Walter though. My sister has been house sitting and watching Walter while we have been gone.

Onto my Friday favorites and happenings.

ONE. While I was in Mississippi, I stopped by the outlet mall to see if I could find any deals. I rarely shop at Ann Taylor, but always shop at Loft. Since this outlet mall didn't have Loft, I opted for Ann Taylor and I found the cutest pants. I have been wearing them a lot at work. They are comfy, stretchy and very flattering. And I got them for about $20. Seriously hoping I can find another pair in a different color. I can't find them online sadly.

TWO. Did you read my post yesterday on the 39 things about my favorite person? Lindsay, from Lindsay's Sweet World did the same for her husband a few months ago when he turned 39 and I knew that I wanted to do that for my husband.

THREE. Lizzie invited me to her new Facebook group, We Heart Deals and she posted a few deals that I couldn't help but scoop up for Easter and now I want to share them with you all.

FOUR. Since my husband won't be reading this post before he receives his present, I thought I would show you all what I got him. My husband drives a Toyota Tundra and he loves his truck. He has done some upgrades to it since he got it in 2013 (side rail steps that we bought for his birthday a few years back, a new exhaust system and some other minor stuff). He has been wanting custom floor mats for awhile and I finally decided to gift him them for his birthday. These are the ones I got.
Weathertech floor liners

From all the reviews and photos, they fit seamlessly into the truck and provide a lot of protection to the carpeted areas. I really hope he likes them and will let you all know after he uses them.

Happy Birthday to My Favorite Man

Almost a month ago, Lindsay wrote 39 things about her favorite person because he was turning 39. Well just like Lindsay's husband, Rory is turning 39 today. I seriously can't believe that! One more year until he is 40. And he hates when I remind him of that.

But Rory is my favorite person EVER. I mention Rory here and there, but I never really go into what he does, how his brain works and his passions. That is why I am going to give you 39 things about my husband today.

1. Rory and I were born in the same city, but he moved away when he was 7 (I was a year and a half) to California. He moved to one of the most expensive areas in Northern California, Marin.

2. Rory grew up a die hard Niners, Giants and Warriors fan. His family had Niners season tickets most of his life and we have been to four games together. He has seen the Giants play in their old stadium (Candlestick) and AT&T park (new stadium).
Niners Candlestick Park

3. Rory is super competitive when it comes to sports. He has been known to get fouls called on him for elbowing someone during basketball.

4. Rory is pretty amazing at golf, but his driver swing has been lacking in the last couple years. He used to be a 7 handicap, but it has since dropped. He can hit the ball soooo far.

5. Rory went to the same high school as Tupac and Courtney Thorne-Smith (Melrose Place and Two and a Half Men).

6. He used to break dance as a kid.

7. His favorite genre of music is rap/hip-hop. He was listening to rap music as a young child and it still holds strong as his favorite.

8. Rory knows all of the words to Ice Ice Baby. He always sings it when it comes on the radio.

9. We went to the same university and both majored in business, but his focus was finance. He was also part of the business fraternity.
Nevada Wolf Pack Tailgate

10. Rory does yoga every Wednesday. He also does yoga at home. It is the only effective way of him keeping his back in good health. #backspasms

11. He is very loud. He has been known to get into one too many "fights" on twitter. He was also threatened on his yelp account since he was an elite and someone was pissed off at one of his reviews.

12. Rory is part french and he has the nose to prove it.

13. Rory cooks the best eggs. Nobody's can compare to his. He uses a splash of vanilla and spices and they are the fluffiest eggs.

14. He is extremely intelligent. He can carry on the best conversations with people and just seems to have a lot of knowledge on everything.
wedding rehearsal

15. He has big feet. Size 14.

16. He loves dessert. Mint chip ice cream, dark chocolate anything, pies, frozen yogurt...but he is not a big fan of cake.

17. He is an adventurous eater. When we were just co-workers, a bunch of us went to a pho restaurant and he got this soup with tripe (stomach lining), tongue and another weird body part. It looked so foul, but he happily ate it. His favorite basque dish is sweet breads (cow glands).

18. Rory loves to go hiking. He has more gear than anyone I know and is up for a hike no matter the time of year or weather.

19. Rory loves reading the news. He is always in the know.

20. Rory loves Airhead bites almost as much as I do. I introduced them to him and now he even gets them when he travels like I do.

21. Rory is the perfect mix of Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith. Seriously. Look at his picture. If Rory grows out a beard and wears a hat, he is dead on for Rodgers.

22. He doesn't cook much, but is amazing when it comes to grilling meats. Speaking of cooking, I remember one time when we were dating, he made himself spaghetti, but it turned out to be more like chili that he put on noodles.

23. He can change a diaper in no time flat. And he is never grossed out by the poopy diapers. Or if he is, he never shows it.

24. When I was pregnant, I think Rory secretly wanted boys, but now that he has girls, I don't think he would change it for anything. His girls have him wrapped around their fingers and loves them something fierce.

25. His favorite cocktail is an Old Fashion.

26. He has had the same best friend since second grade.

27. Rory was the cutest little boy. He had the blondest hair and always looked so put together in all his photos growing up. His mom even made his and his sister's clothes.

28. Rory and his sister often have calf off competitions. They have now included my sweet nephew in the best calves competition.

29. Rory and his sister send each other videos doing their best "new boot goofing" when they get new shoes.

30. He has been out of the country a lot. Between work and personal, he has traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Italy, England, Malta, Sweden, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and I am sure I am missing some.

31. He has had season tickets to both football and basketball at the University of Nevada for as long as I can remember. He loves his team through and through. Even when I gave up my basketball tickets because I couldn't watch them lose anymore (I know, awful. Especially since they are soooo good this year).

32. He isn't into Halloween or dressing up (costumes), but he has been a good sport for me over the years.
Juno Costume

33. He loves watching old 80s movies. He constantly puts on something from our past. From the Godfather to Revenge of the Nerds.

34. He is part of a long line of Nevada alumnis. So many of his family members graduated from there.

35. His middle name is his grandfather's name. His dad also carries it as his middle name. If we were ever to have a boy, he would have the middle name of Allan as well.

36. He loves to garden and do yard work. And now he can't wait to share that with the girls.

37. He loves snowboarding and used to strive to be the first chair (first one on the lift for the day means fresh powder).

38. He won't eat pineapple on his pizza.

39. He LOVES shoes. He has more pairs of shoes than I do.

Happy Birthday Rory!

That is a lot harder than it looks. Coming up with 39 things about a person is tough, but I am so glad that I could showcase my favorite person!

What's Up Wednesday

It has been awhile since I participated in a What's Up Wednesday and since I am on vacation, I thought this was the perfect week to participate.

WHAT WE ARE EATING THIS WEEK...

Well we are eating soooo much Mexican food, but they don't call it Mexican food. They just call it food and it is heaven. We are eating al pastor tacos, fish tacos, fried red snapper, fajitas, pastries, so many eggs and just so much seafood. I have been working out hard so I can enjoy all the goodness Mexico has to offer and let me tell you, we are enjoying plenty of margaritas and cervezas.

WHAT I'M REMINISCING ABOUT...

Our Mexico trip last year. Just before we went to Mexico last April, Rory's great aunt passed away. So this time while we are in Mexico, we are celebrating his great aunt even more.

WHAT I'M LOVING...

All the sunshine, warm temperatures, family time and food. Did I mention, I love the food here?

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO...

Well we have been relaxing, walking the city a ton and today we are taking an adventure over to Sayulita for one night. Rory and I are kid free today and part of tomorrow and we are traveling an hour north to have a day to ourselves. The girls are hanging out with their grandparents and we plan to explore the city.
Sayulita
Sayulita (not the hotel we are staying at)

Tomorrow is Rory's birthday, so we will be celebrating full force.

WHAT I'M DREADING...

Coming home. Ha. I do miss my pup, Walter and love the comforts of home, but I just love it here. Oh and going back to work because who wants to do that?

WHAT I'M WORKING ON...

My tan. Pool days and 80 degree temperatures make it so easy to slip into the vacation mode.

WHAT I'M EXCITED ABOUT...

Our trip to Sayulita today. Too bad they are not filming Bachelor in Paradise here yet. That would be fun to see the couples on dates here.

WHAT I'M WATCHING/READING...

Finally reading Big Little Lies. It only took me over a month to start it. We are also catching the March Madness games here.

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO...

Lots of Spanish music, March Madness games and my girls whose language has really exploded lately. They are taking up a storm and wanting to know what everything is, where someone is and how to do something. It is so much fun watching my girls learn about new things and discover the little things.

WHAT I'M WEARING...

Summer attire and it feels great. I have been working out hard to try to get in bikini shape and while I ate a lot of pizza and pasta, I feel like I did a pretty good job.

But I am wearing a lot of J Crew shorts, a J Crew bikini, Madwell t-shirts, Gap tanks and some late picks from Nordstrom Rack.

WHAT I'M DOING THIS WEEKEND...

Relaxing in Mexico. Well until Saturday afternoon. Then we head back to the states and to see my Walter pup. The rest of the weekend will be spent doing laundry, unpacking and getting ready for the week ahead.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH...

My mom's birthday, Easter, Spring like weather, snowboarding, work travel and more outdoors time.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW...

Not much else is new in my life. Kinda boring, huh?
