Friday's Favorites

It's Friday and I couldn't be more excited. We have a lot planned this weekend and I can't wait to get off to start it all.

ONE. We have to pick the girls up by noon today because their daycare is closing to host a giant Easter celebration at the south location. Even though it is during naptime, we want to take the girls there. Our hopes is to get the girls to sleep in the car for an hour while we run some errands. Otherwise this evening could be a cranky one.

But at the event, the girls can hunt for eggs, take photos with the Easter bunny (we haven't done those any year yet. Do I smell a repeat of our adventures with Santa?), get their faces painted, go in bounce houses and so many other activities. I really hope my girls enjoy it.

TWO. Did you catch yesterday's Girl Chat post on Easter Traditions? I talked about my old traditions and the new ones. I also mentioned that my sister-in-law, brother-in-law and nephew are coming into town and it has been about 4 months since we last saw them. I am soooo excited to snuggle my nephew (he is 9 months now!) and watch him and the girls take on our Easter traditions.
Girl Chat

THREE. I am always looking for new things to watch on Netflix since I watch a lot of it when I workout at the gym. I have made my way through many series and movies on the treadmill. I was looking for something new and there was an ad up top for a new show called 13 Reasons Why. I clicked on it, read the synopsis and was intrigued. Now the story isn't lighthearted at all, but I am fascinated by it due to my friend's brother committing suicide.

It is an awful act and hurts everyone so profoundly, but the topic still interests me. It helps us understand the reasons why and ways to look for the signs.

But I digress. I am four episodes in and I am hooked. I need to know why and how and want to binge it, but also want to save it for the gym.

Have you watched it? Have you heard of it?
13 Reasons Why

FOUR. I have two posts coming next week going through each car we test drove and thought about. I know a lot of you have shown interest in our car buying process and I wanted to share the pros, cons and thoughts on each car.

Remember that this is just what we thought and what worked for our family.

FIVE. This week I finally went to the dermatologist after almost a year and a half. I am always adamant about going yearly, but the time got away from me and then Emily reminded me to make my appointment. Once I made the appointment, it was over a month wait. But I got checked out and everything looks good. No mole changes and she injected two scars (from mole removals) with a steroid to help flatten them out and make one of them stop hurting. So I call the whole appointment a win.

Also, this is a PSA to make your appointments and get your skin checked.

Girl Chat - Easter Traditions

It's time for a little Girl Chat and this month we are talking about our Easter traditions. My Easter traditions have changed over the years, especially now that I have children myself.

When I was a child, we would go to my grandma's house about a week or so before Easter and we would color eggs with my aunts and their children (my cousins). We had so much fun decorating eggs and seeing how others colored their eggs. After we were finished, we would gather our eggs (about a dozen each) and head home.

A week later, Easter morning arrived and we would wake up and search the house (inside and out) for Easter eggs. Sometimes along the way, we would see our Easter baskets, but as we got older, it was harder and harder to find the basket. Once we found all of the eggs and our baskets, we would go through everything. I loved the thought that went into our baskets. There was always our favorite candy, something that we had been really wanting and things that we were into at the moment.

We usually had breakfast at home and would get in our prettiest dresses and head back out to my grandmother's house for another Easter egg hunt and dinner. It was always the tradition.

As we got older, the egg hunting stopped, but my mom and dad would gift us with a basket each year. We would still do an Easter egg hunt at the families house before dinner.

Now that I am married with children, we have done the previous two Easter's with my family, but this year we are spending it with my in-laws.

If we were doing it with my family, we would head to my aunt's house and have a big Easter egg hunt after everyone got there. These eggs are plastic and filled with money, candy and other prizes (massages, wine, etc.). This gets us older cousins out there hunting for eggs with our kids and younger cousins. Then we would have a big dinner.

This year we plan to do an Easter egg hunt inside our house when the girls get up and let them find their Easter baskets. Then we will go to my in-laws house after the girls' naps and hang out over there. I am not sure what my mother-in-law has planned, but we are always up for new traditions. Plus my sweet nephew will be there and I am aching to see my girls and him play and search for eggs together.

What are your Easter traditions?

Puerto Vallarta Vacation Days 7 and 8

I am back for the last installment of our Puerto Vallarta Mexico vacation. You can read yesterday's post here.

Remember how I said you need the mosquito nets in Sayulita?
Amor Boutique Hotel

Well it turns out they were right. We put the net around us while we slept and when we woke there were bugs on the net and inside the villa. Yes, we slept with our sliders open, so that contributed to it, but who wouldn't want to sleep with them open when you are that high up away from everyone. And no, there weren't a ton of bugs, just a few. But I remember on BIP people complaining about the bugs.

We got up leisurely which was amazing since we NEVER get to do that. We got ready, sat out on the balcony to read for awhile before heading out around 10:30. While I read my book, Rory looked for breakfast places. He found one not too far from our hotel and it was really good (Yah Yah Sayulita Cafe). We both got lattes, and a fruit, granola and yogurt bowl to share and then I had the french toast while he had a special eggs benedict. My french toast was made using their homemade bread that had so many grains and deliciousness in it.

 Before yogurt and granola

And after. That is fresh, homemade granola that we begged them to buy some extra.

This was the best fruit, yogurt and granola bowl I have ever had. So good. I could eat that every morning.

After breakfast, we walked around the town some more. We wanted to go back to a few stores to buy some gifts and souvenirs. We also made another stop for coffees, waters and a beer. You can walk around with beers or drinks in Sayulita and no one says anything about it. So we decided to have a farewell beer while walking back towards the bus stop. We left Sayulita around 1:30 pm and got back to Puerto Vallarta at 3 pm.

When we walked into the condo, the girls greeted us and sang Happy Birthday to Rory. It was so cute and sweet. I guess they were practicing all day.

We settled back into the condo and headed up to the pool with the girls. We were able to lay out for awhile and get some Mexican sun. Since it was Rory's birthday, I let him pick where he wanted me to take him for his birthday dinner. He chose a place that we went to last year, but when we arrived there they didn't have the dishes we wanted to have (filet minion fajitas and an amazing seafood pasta). I have no idea why they took it off the menu as it was insanely popular, but they did. Plus they wanted to seat us right next to the door which the seat got bumped every time the door opened. So we decided to go somewhere else.

We went looking for our back up and found out it was closed randomly. So we went back to a favorite, Joe Jack's Fish Shack and the wait was short which is unheard of. We started off with the papaya thai salad and two cocktails. Then I had one of their specials, meatballs with zoodles, veggies and mashed potatoes. Sounds weird, but it was heavenly. Rory got their octopus special. It was spicy and perfectly tender. Then we got another round of cocktails and the best coconut pie.

After dinner, we walked around, reminisced about our day and headed back to the condo for a glass of wine and bedtime.

Friday we got up and I headed out to the atm and to pick up pastries for everyone to enjoy. Once I got back, we all ate and then Rory and I headed off to massages. We had another hour and a half massage and it was even better than the first. We were so relaxed and felt like a million bucks.

After our massages, we went out to grab lunch Salud Super Foods which featured salads, sandwiches and smoothies. Everything was healthy and delicious. The girls even loved my Thai bowl I got. After lunch, we put the girls down for naps and I read while they napped. Once they got up, we got them ready for some pool time. We went to the pool for a couple of hours. We were able to layout, play in the pool and enjoy our last full day in Puerto Vallarta.

We got the girls dinner and fed them while my in-laws headed out to dinner. We put the girls down for bed and read on the patio while we waited.

I never get tired of this sunset. Once my in-laws were back, we headed out to the restaurant we wanted to try the day before but was closed, Martini en Fuego Grill. This is a little mom and pops restaurant with only 7 or so tables in it. We timed it right and got in quickly, but right after there was a long line.

We ordered a shrimp dish that had a bunch of garlic in a ceramic pot and it was really good. It was basically like a shrimp scampi. It came with bread to soak in all the garlic broth.

Rory got a traditional Mexican plate with chile releno, enchilada, steak and all the sides. I got a baby fried red snapper with rice and veggies.

The sauce was so good and paired perfectly with all aspects of the dish.

After dinner, we walked the Melacon and Rory got gelato, but I was still too stuffed for anything else. We tried to find a bar for another margarita, but none were open yet (in the area we were at and was not a restaurant).

So we walked a bunch more before heading back to the condo and finishing the wine we had left. We settled in for bed and I woke up early not feeling that well. I had a stomach ache, but I am not sure what from. Rory ate what I ate and felt great.

We packed our things while my in-laws watched the girls and before we knew it, it was time to head down to go to the airport. We said our tearful goodbyes and headed off. The girls fell asleep in the taxi on the way to the airport. We got through the Southwest lines in a half hour which is so much better than last year in the United line. Security was easy and Rory walked around with the girls while we waited for our flight.

As I said before, our flights were pretty good and the girls weren't too crazy on the way home. We did have some meltdowns, but everyone near us was pretty good with the girls.

We got home at 10 pm, put the girls to bed, showered, unpacked and headed to bed after an episode of Modern Family.

And there you have it. Our amazing Mexico vacation. I can't wait for next year's vacation sans toddlers!!!

Don't forget to link up with me and some awesome bloggers tomorrow for Girl Chat. The topic is What Are Your Easter Traditions? I can't wait to share mine and read yours!!!

Puerto Vallarta Vacation Day 6 - Sayulita

I am back for another recap of our Puerto Vallarta trip. If you missed, Part 1 (days 1 and 2) or Part 2 (days 3, 4 and 5), be sure to check those out.

We left off on Wednesday morning where we had to make our decision on staying in PV or heading home.

That night the girls slept well and woke up in a great mood. We were not sure if it was a fluke or if Avery was really feeling better. When she ate breakfast, we knew that she was doing better. Thank goodness.

After talking to my in-laws we decided that staying would be the best and they gave us the go ahead to head to Sayulita. You may have guessed that if you saw any of my posts on Instagram.

We headed out around 9 am to take a bus to the main part of town...the Walmart and port. Once we got there, we hopped on another bus that took us to Sayulita. It was a total of 1 1/2 hours to get from our condo to the town of Sayulita.

Sayulita is a surf town and it was completely different than Puerto Vallarta. I had been wanting to go there for a long time, but it was fueled even more when they started filming Bachelor in Paradise there. No we didn't stay at the same hotel, but we stayed a half mile from there.

We arrived in Sayulita and were not sure where to go. They drop you off at the beginning of town and it looks nothing like the pictures you see online. You have to walk down a long dirt road to get to the heart of town. We were told this is changing with another permanent road being built, but for now, it is a dirt road.

We followed some people from the bus down and got into the heart of Sayulita. Our first stop was lunch. We went to a little seafood shack, Barracuda, and it was amazing. We had shrimp ceviche tostadas that were loaded with all sorts of goodies.

After lunch, we walked the beach towards our hotel. We stayed at the Amor Boutique in the Villa de Amor. We got checked in, but our room wasn't quite ready since we arrived early. So we headed up to the pool for a bit and then back downstairs to grab a margarita. I had a pineapple one and it was strong and tasty.

After drinks, our room was ready so we headed up there to unpack and change before heading out again. Side note: our room was at the tallest point of the hotel. We hiked up a ton of stairs which was ok for us, but not for others. The views were beautiful.

As you can see, the villa is small, but perfect for two people.

We headed out after to go sightseeing, shopping and more drinking.

We headed back into town and went to Rory's friends boutique, but she wasn't working at the time. We stopped in several other shops, picked up some stuff and headed towards the beach to walk it again. But then we found a cute little bar and decided to go in for a drink. I found a drink that had fresh kiwi, vodka, sugar and lime and it was one of the best drinks I have ever had. Seriously, I need to add kiwi to my drinks now.

After drinks, we walked around more until we decided to head out for an early dinner at a taco place, El Itacate. This place specializes in a burrito that has fried cheese as a tortilla instead of an actual tortilla. And it is huge.

They start you off with a ton of salsas, grilled onions and other goodies. We also ordered the guacamole because I need guac everywhere I go. Then Rory had the Itacate burrito with rib eye and I had the arrachera tacos. I read reviews that said don't order 6 of them because they were huge and everyone was right. I was completely stuffed at 2 of them.

After dinner and beers, we headed out to walk around. We were so stuffed and needed to burn some calories.

Earlier in the day there were reports that our basketball coach was going to be leaving Nevada to go to Cal and Rory was up in arms about it. Seriously devastated. I told him to not worry until it was a done deal. I felt our coach would stay because it was only his second year and he has done great things for us (getting to the NCAA tournament). Rory kept telling me no, and what do you know, a few hours later, the coach came out and said he is staying at Nevada. I was right and Rory owed me a tequila shot. Ha. I never drink tequila unless it is in margarita form, but when in Mexico, right?!

So we searched for a bar and found one. We made ourselves comfortable and asked for a top shelf tequila which was $1 or 19 pesos. Seriously. So we took the shot and it was smooth for tequila. And then we had him make us margaritas. I had a passion fruit (fresh) margarita and Rory has a mescal spicy one.
Sayulita bars

After two drinks, we headed back to our hotel. Since the pool was open 24 hours, we decided to go down for a swim. The water was cold, but it was fun to be in the infinity pool and take advantage of it since we didn't get to go in it earlier. After showers, we called it a night.

And I am going to stop there, before I get picture overload on here. Stay tuned tomorrow for days 7 and 8, also know as Rory's birthday and Friday, the day before we left.

Weekending and the Time We Bought a Car

Wow what a weekend it has been. I am exhausted, but so happy!

As I have mentioned here before, we have been car shopping. It has been a long and exhausting process. We shopped at Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda. We looked at compact SUVS and mid-size SUVS.

Friday, we worked half day and figured since it was rainy and windy, we might be able to get a great deal as no one wants to car shop in the rain. Including us.

So after a quick lunch, we headed over to Honda to test drive the Honda Pilot. We had already test drove the CR-V, but we didn't think it was big enough for our long term needs. Note: I plan to do a post on all the cars we drove. The pros and cons of them and our thoughts. It won't be too long, so don't worry, but I want to let others know what we thought just in case you are car shopping.

Anyways, we thought the Pilot was great, but unless you are getting the Touring or Elite, it didn't cover all of our needs. We did sit through some financing talk to see what numbers we could get on the Pilot. After spending an hour and a half there, we left and headed back to Toyota. This our third time at Toyota. The first time we just looked at cars and didn't even speak to anyone.

We came back to the one we loved and test drove, but the numbers just didn't work out last time. But we sat down again and began to haggle. It took three or four times to finally get to a decent price. Another note: we have USAA and we use their car buying service. This gives us a super low price. Way below MSRP. We still wanted even lower than that. And Toyota worked with us, so we said goodbye to my Subaru and hello to my Highlander.

I went with this newer green color (jade mica metallic to be exact). It is green and gray depending on the light and it is soooo beautiful. The interior is gray, black and hints of blue. It is the limited version so it has everything in it. And we got a screaming deal. Total win.

But it took a lot longer than we thought it would and picked the girls up two minutes until 5:30 which is when they start charging. Though they said they wouldn't charge even if we were late since we have never been late in the two years we had been going there.

We loaded up the girls in the new car and Avery kept asking where was mommy's car? She missed my car so much all weekend. We drove home instead of the pizza place because Avery wasn't having it.

I made them dinner while Rory entertained them and then after they ate, we played for awhile before Rory headed out to grab pizza for him and I. We put the girls to bed at 8 pm and settled in for Parenthood, pizza and some wine to celebrate.

Saturday morning I went out to grab some coffee and pastries. After eating, we headed to Total Wine, Target and Trader Joes. We had to stock up on snacks and scotch. We were headed home when the girls fell asleep in the car, so we drove around some more and let them nap. But we went home quickly to unload the car and headed back out for lunch with family that was in town. We had lunch at Midtown Eats and went over wedding stuff. That is what Rory's cousins were in town for.

After lunch, we took the girls home for a late nap. They slept two hours and then were up just in time for my parents to come over and see the new car. We showed them the new car and then we played with the girls for a couple hours.

My parents left and we made the girls dinner and then I went to the grocery store to grab some items for dinner. I made the Vegetable Tortilla Stew from the Cravings cookbook. The girls went to bed late again, but we watched a few more episodes of Parenthood while eating dinner. We are only a season away from the end which is sad. So send us your recommendations on new shows to watch on Netflix.

Sunday morning we got up and I went to grab coffee and pastries again and then we headed out to go snowboarding. It had snowed a lot on Friday and Saturday, so the conditions were pretty good. We did 16 runs in 3 1/2 hours and were exhausted. But look at this view.
Mt Rose ski resort

We came home to sleeping toddlers and we showed my in-laws my car. We also went through some stuff they brought over to see if we were interested in any of it. We picked out a light piece and it is already up and looks great in our house.
light wall decor

I headed out to the grocery store while the girls napped and also made a Costco run along the way. Everywhere was so crowded. I think everyone wanted to get out in the nice weather.

Once I got home and we got everything unloaded, we headed out on a walk. After our walk, I made dinner for the girls and while they ate, I started our dinner. We also watched the rest of the Masters. Side note: any advice on getting the girls to wait to eat with us, so I only make one meal? They want to eat at 5:30, right when we get home for work and it isn't enough time to make dinner by then. They will only wait if we go out to dinner and that is usually no later than 6 pm.

Anyways, after their dinner, we gave them baths and got everything ready for the week. And they wore their new pjs and just had to show them off.
twin toddlers

At 7:30, we put the girls to bed and sat down for dinner and some Big Little Lies. Though we fell asleep around 9 pm since we were exhausted from the day.

How was your weekend?

Friday's Five

I feel like I have written this post all week long. I was in a training class all week and wrote when I could, aka between class segments and before class. So if I haven't responded to your comments or have commented on your blog, know it is because I was super busy this week. I hope to catch up today and this weekend!

But I am thankful it is the weekend. We don't have a lot planned as it is supposed to be a cold and rainy weekend. Let's just hope we have enough sunshine to get out and go on some walks and get out of the house.

Onto, Friday favorites.

ONE. You know when you have an issue with a package you received and the company is awful to work with? Well I can tell you Bumble and Bumble is pretty amazing. No this isn't sponsor talk, just sharing an amazing company with you.

I have been using B&B for years. My old hairstylist introduced me to it and I always go back to it. I do try other shampoos, but always go back to B&B in between trying new ones. They have a great price point, it doesn't weigh down my hair, love the scent and it gives my fine hair some volume. I use the thickening shampoo and conditioner. I have used other shampoos and conditioners by them as well, but this one is my favorite.

Anyways, back to why they have great customer service. I received a liter of the conditioner along with some samples and when I opened the box, the conditioner had exploded and was everywhere. I tried to clean the samples and see how much was gone from the bottle and about half of the bottle was inside the box. I called B&B and told them what happened and they said immediately said they were sending me a new one in express shipping with more samples. I asked if I needed to send back the damaged one and they said no. They said to keep it and use it if there is still some left. No questions asked.

That is good customer service.

TWO. I love getting memories on Facebook, especially when they are of my sweet baby girls. I don't post much to Facebook anymore, but I did right after the girls were born. A couple days ago, this picture of Sutton came up in my feed. She loved this swing. More than her sister did. I could put her in the swing and she would go for hours if I let her. Look at how little my nugget was. And look at how big the WubbaNub was compared to Sutton! All the heart eye emojis.
infant in swings

THREE. I am in several work pools for sports over the year to find out my draft position for the 2017 NFL Fantasy Football. Last one was March Madness and this one is the Masters. Now this one is hard for me since I only knew people from the first group. I literally picked names from the other three groups based on how cool, unique or fun their names were. I am sure this isn't a good strategy, but when you know little about golf, it is what you do.

FOUR. Pearl and Monroe strikes again. This time in the form of a pineapple shirt. I saw the shirt on Instastories and fell in love with it because who doesn't love pineapples. It looked great on Jess and I knew I needed it. I asked her what size she was wearing and promptly wrote medium for my size. I seriously can't wait to wear this all summer. So cute.
Pearl and Monroe pineapple shirt

I really wanted this peplum, but I know I shouldn't buy anymore. Ha. Especially when I am trying to buy a car. But seriously go grab this beauty before it's gone.
Pearl and Monroe Peplum

FIVE. It is getting closer and closer to summer which means beach days. It also means days spent at Garwoods enjoying my most favorite cocktail ever, the Wet Woody. My sweet friend's birthday was Wednesday and she took the day off, headed to Lake Tahoe with her husband and enjoyed Wet Woody's. Jealous is an understatement, but she enjoyed her birthday in one of my favorite ways and definitely one of the ways we usually spend my birthday. Drinks at Garwoods followed by dinner in Tahoe. I love having Summer birthdays. And speaking of birthdays, it was Lindsay's, from Lindsay's Sweet World, birthday on Wednesday. Happy Birthday Lindsay!
Garwoods Wet Woody

SIX. My friend, Crystal has been battling stage 4 gastric cancer for over two years now. She travels back and forth between Reno and Houston (the top cancer institute) for her treatments. She is incredible. Not only is she fighting cancer, but she is still working, is a mom to a sweet three year old boy, has an amazing husband and is still trying to live her life to the fullest.

I know I don't talk about cancer much because let's face it, it is scary. But then I am reminded of how powerful cancer is and know that it is hard to kick its butt. You just never know when it hits close to home. So please send some prayers to my friend.

Confessions and Thoughts on Thursday

It's time for some confessions or thoughts on Thursday, whichever you would like.

<div class="sparkles-and-lattes-button" style="width: 250px; margin: 0 auto;"> <a href="http://sparklesandlattes.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow"> <img src="http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t472/lmalex13/Confessional%20Thursday.jpg" alt="Sparkles and Lattes" width="250" height="250" /> </a> </div>

CONFESSIONS

- That I was mildly annoyed to come to work on Monday only to find out I had a training class Tuesday through today. We signed up for it 7 months ago and the training staff (they book it all, plan it, pay for it, etc.) never reminded us. There were three of us going and no one knew the dates and bam, we had to change up our weekly plans for it. So thankful it was a good class.

- I hate car shopping. It is so stressful. All of the haggling with the sales people. Ugh. Just get to the bottom line instead of keeping me there for 2 1/2 hours. And why do cars cost so much now? #needmoremoney

- I hate filing my taxes now. I used to receive refunds every year and then we got married. We got a small refund the first year, but have paid a ton each year. We have changed our deductions to married 0, had more money go out to our health savings accounts and deferred comp, switched to a different vesting option and even started to pay more towards taxes each paycheck and we still get hit. How can we pay over $16,000 in childcare and only get a $50 credit? Ugh. Annoyed is an understatement.

THOUGHTS

- I am missing Mexico. My in-laws came home last Friday and we saw them on Sunday. They brought the girls some gifts, some stuff they packed for us and we reminisced about our time in Puerto Vallarta. While we didn't get to do a lot of things (due to a cranky toddler), we still relaxed, soaked in the sun and did a ton of walking.

My in-laws wanted to book the condo for a few weeks next year, but we told them we didn't want to bring the girls next year if we go. We wanted to go by ourselves. So they offered to watch the girls for a week while we went. They will got for a week or two, travel back and then we will go for a week. Sounds good to me. That means more exploring. I really feel fortunate to have this opportunity that we do having the condo in the family.

- I am finally feeling more like myself. I haven't felt this way in almost a month. Between bronchitis and a sinus infection, I was sick most of March.

- You may have seen it earlier this week, but I had the leftover chicken lettuce wraps (from Cravings cookbook) for lunch. I didn't have high hopes of them reheating that well, but surprisingly, they did. They were not chewy, kept their texture and tasted just as good as the day before. It did help that I brought in a head of butter lettuce. Yes, I did. I am sure my co-workers thought it was weird to see a full head of lettuce in the fridge.

Remember how I didn't even want to make them again? Well I have made them 3 times since then because they are so dang good. I use a large stock pot and a screen to protect from the oil and it has worked out beautifully. Now to buy a food processor. Do you all have recommendations?
